Director for Lectures
Smithsonian Institution
Washington, D.C.

Dear Sirs:

\J	I will be giving a series of seminars at the Peabody Conservatory in

Baltimore from November 18 to 20. During this time I would like to offer your

institution a lecture on the early electronic musical instrument, the Rhythmicon,

which was developed by Henry Cowell and Leon Theremin fifty years ago. Your

collection of musical instruments includes the only remaining Rhythmicon.

I have done extensive research into the capabilities of the Rhythmicon

and have made a computer simulation of the instrument's performance. My lecture

would include illustrations of Henry Cowell's notation for the Rhythmicon and

taped examples from Cowell's concerto, "Rhythmicana." This work was composed in

part as a demonstration of Cowell's attempts to integrate rhythm and the ratios of

of the overtone series. My talk would include some examples from Cowell's "Romantic

Quartet" which set forth his acoustical theories at the early date of 1919.

I think many people in the Washington area would find this talk to be of

interest and the Smithsonian seems to me to be the ideal place to present it.

I look forward to hearing from you on this matter.\.
